Rory McIlroy Fires 67 in His Best Masters Round 1 Since 2011

Rory McIlroy Opens Masters with Strong 5-Under 67 at Augusta

In Augusta, Georgia, Rory McIlroy began his first round at the Masters feeling slightly nervous as he stepped onto the first tee at Augusta National. He admitted his hands were shaking, a familiar feeling throughout his career, but one he now embraces with gratitude.

McIlroy explained that feeling nervous is normal for him, and he actually sees it as a positive sign. It shows that the tournament still means a lot to him, and he believes it would be more concerning if he did not feel any pressure at all.

In his opening round, McIlroy did not play perfect golf by his standards. However, he managed to stay patient and composed, finishing with a 5-under 67 and sharing the first-round lead with Sam Burns. This marked his best opening round at the Masters since 2011.

He admitted that the first seven holes were difficult, with inconsistent ball striking. In the past, this might have caused him to become cautious, but this time he chose to trust his swing and stay committed instead of panicking.

Despite hitting only 5 of 14 fairways, McIlroy still produced key birdies, including on holes 13 and 15 after finding trouble among the pine trees. He also birdied the 14th hole, which had been a struggle for him in the previous year.

McIlroy felt that based on his performance, a score of around 2-under would have been more realistic. However, he emphasized the importance of staying calm and avoiding costly mistakes. Unlike last year, when his round was disrupted by late double bogeys, this time he stayed steady and in control.

He also highlighted the importance of focusing on process and decision-making rather than just results. By doing so, he believes he can swing more freely and avoid overthinking each shot.

McIlroy added that winning the Masters and completing the career Grand Slam has made him more comfortable under pressure. With that achievement behind him, he feels more confident handling expectations at Augusta.

Backed by strong support from the crowd, McIlroy ended the day showing maturity and control in his game. Now the big question remains: can he become the first player since Tiger Woods to win back-to-back Green Jackets?

McIlroy himself believes that winning one Masters makes winning a second even more possible.
